Description
Thymus mastichina
From the lamiaceae family iriginating in Spain and should not be confused with sweet of French Marjoram, Marjorana hortensis.
It is a perennial plant growing up to 60 cms high with a hairy stem, dark green oval leaves and small reddish purple flowers.
The whole plant is strongly aromatic. The oil has a warm, penetrating and slightly eucalyptus type odour. And it is steam distilled from the dried flowering herb.
Spanish Marjoram properties are analgesic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, bactericidal, carminative, digestive, diuretic, expectorant, hypotensive, nervine, stomachic, vulnerary.
Considered to have similar properties to Sweet Marjoram.
Due to the higher 1,8-cineole content of Spanish marjoram, this oil is more effective used as an expectorant for respiratory tract infections and spasms. It is non toxix, non irritant and non sensitising.
